Laboratory Technician – Non-Exempt
Job Description
Laboratory Technician Job Summary:
Laboratory Technicians have diverse functions in areas of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes. Laboratory Technicians work in private laboratories (clinical) or physician office labs. Laboratory Technicians will perform routine clinical laboratory test done in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, coagulation, and molecular diagnosis. In addition, the Lab Tech will have responsibilities related to information processing, training and quality control within the laboratory
Laboratory Technician Job Duties:
- Keeps laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
- Makes decisions concerning sample collection and handling; sample testing
- Collection and interpretation of data; maintenance of accurate records and reporting data.
- Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books.
- Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data; selecting corrective steps.
- Completes projects by assisting project team; attending and participating in group and project meetings.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
- Enhances laboratory and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments

The level of analyses performed may range from point of care testing to complex testing, involving all major areas of the clinical laboratory. The ability to relate to people, a capacity for calm and reasoned judgment, and a demonstration of commitment to the patient are essential qualities. Communication skills are necessary for consultative interaction with other members of the health care team, technical service matters and patient education. Laboratory professionals should demonstrate ethical and moral attitudes that are necessary for maintaining the confidentiality of patient information and gaining the confidence of patients, professional associates and the community.
Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or G.E.D and;
Associate’s degree as a clinical or medical lab technician required
